Northern Archaeological Research Ltd was established as an archaeological consultancy in 1995 in response to a need for specialist archaeological advice in relation to the archaeological provisions of the Resource Management Act and the NZHPT Act, 1993 (now the Heritage NZ Act, 2014).Northern Archaeological Research Ltd offers professional archaeological services nationwide and has specialised in the archaeological landscape of Kaipara, Rodney, Northland and the Far North since 1995. Over this time we have undertaken and completed large infrastructure projects and small scale domestic projects. Our aim is to supply our clients with professional specialist archaeological services with the same level of attention to detail, no matter how large or small the project is.
Current and previous clients range from Government Departments to Local and Regional Councils; Telecommunication companies; Forestry Companies; small and large scale subdivision developments; and private residential developments. NAR Ltd is based in Devonport, Auckland and regularly works in the Far North, Northland and Auckland; and is available to work nationwide.NAR Ltd works closely with the Waikato University Radiocarbon Dating Laboratory and Microfossil Research Ltd for specialist dating and microfossil/pollen analysis. Specialist survey and mapping services are undertaken in conjunction with selected surveying companies.

Leigh Johnson
Leigh Johnson is the Director and Senior Partner of Northern Archaeological Research Ltd. Leigh has an M.A (hons) majoring in Archaeology, from Auckland University and has over 30 years’ experience as an archaeologist, including 20 years as the Director and Senior Partner of Northern Archaeological Research Ltd. Prior to establishing the archaeological consulting business in 1995, Leigh worked for the NZ Forest Service, NZ Historic Places Trust and the Department of Conservation as a field archaeologist.
Elisabeth Callaghan
Elisabeth Callaghan is a Director and Partner of Northern Archaeological Research Ltd. Elisabeth has an M.A (hons) in Archaeology and a Post Graduate Diploma in Teaching from Auckland University. As a student she worked in the Auckland Museum Ethnography Department and as a tutor in the Anthropology Department at Auckland University. On graduating from Auckland University, Elisabeth became the Curator of the Rotorua Art and History Museum, a position she held for three years, before moving to back to Auckland. She has been a Director and Partner of NAR Ltd since 1995.
