The Historic Lucas Creek/Albany School (R10/1135) was investigated when it was identified that there may be a possibility that remains associated with the first 1876 school on the site, which had burned to the ground in 1897, were possibly located under subsequent school buildings dating to 1897,1938 and 1956. The investigation showed the only remaining feature of the original school was the base of the chimney and a number of burnt artifacts. One exciting feature recovered were a number of the glazed piles of the 1897/1937 schoolhouse. The 1930s school house was uplifted, restored and re-sited on site; and is now a functioning part of the new Albany High School.

Sometimes it is a privilege to be part of a job which involves working in and around some of the earliest sites in NZ. This site was part of the historic Bedggood Flour Mill and Biscuit factory (P05/267) . The road had a dangerous bend which ran adjacent to the site and FNDC needed to widen the road. Part of the monitoring involved the mapping the entire site, which was done as a joint project with a local survey company. The combined efforts of FNDC, GHD and NAR meant the project was completed without affecting the historic site and added to the body of knowledge about early commercial developments in the Far North.

The NZ Fire Service and Far North Holdings swapped two parcels of land in Paihia. Before the new Paihia Fire Station could be built NAR were contracted to undertake a small investigation of the area. The trenches revealed extensive modification to the site over c. 50years. However a number of small pits and fires coops were identified and sampled. The sampled fire scoops associated wit Q05/1293 were dated to the early 17th century.

The historic village of Kohukohu in the Hokianga had a problem. The road was too narrow to allow large logging trucks to pass safely; and pedestrians including children trying to get to the local primary school, had no safe route to walk along the road. GHD/FNDC and NAR Ltd worked together to formulate a solution which would enable the road to be widened and avoid the historic mill site and wharves. The remains of two wharves were recorded and a number of small artifacts recovered.

The Government and FNDC initiative the Far North Cycle way was a great job. The route went from Opua in the Bay of Islands to Horeke in the Hokianga. Along the way we recorded long forgotten buildings, roads, and developments which are part of the diverse history of the Far North. To date only sections of the trail are completed but the project is ongoing. Pictured are the Okaihau rail tunnel and a family/backbackers accommodation on a private farm in the Utakura.
